Job Description:
The Peer Support Specialist (PSS) is an individual who ideally self-identifies as a consumer of behavioral health services and is well grounded in their own recovery. They model resiliency in overcoming obstacles common to those with behavioral health problems. This position will serve a diverse population of clients, via telehealth, all of whom have presented in emergency departments because they are in a suicide crisis. The PSS will meet with those seeking ED-based suicide care for purposes of helping them utilize an evidence-based suicide prevention app as part of their care plan while in the ED. The PSS will continue to meet with the patient virtually on a weekly basis for up to three months to help ensure that the patient receives the support they need to get through the high-risk period for suicide following hospital discharge. Aftercare meetings will focus on recovery goals, identifying natural and community-based resources, and ongoing use of app-based suicide prevention care.
The position will be part time position that will yield around 10-20 hours per week.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
-Virtually assist ED patients in using the Jaspr Health Crisis App to increase suicide care, instill hope, and prepare for safe post-discharge return home
-Develop a safety plan with patients, reinforce skills use and encourage patients to use Jaspr-at-Home and other resources and skills identified that could be useful
-Serve as a role model demonstrating resiliency in overcoming obstacles common to those with behavioral health conditions and suicidal crisis
-Assist patients in identifying goals that promote recovery and resiliency and help identify services and activities
-Follow up and maintain contact with program patients.
-Help program patients identify natural supports
-Directly address patients’ suicidal thoughts and feelings; encourage use of effective evidence-based interventions available in Jaspr-at-Home to prevent suicide.
-Administer surveys
Requirements: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
-Individual with lived experience in active recovery 1+ year from mental illness, substance use disorder.
-History and recovery from suicidal behavior (e.g., suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, non-suicidal self-injury).
REQUIREMENTS:
-Must have a Missouri Peer Bridger Certificate
-Needs to be available to start in February 2022
DESIRED SKILLS:
-Knowledge of one or more evidence-based approaches to prevent suicide (e.g., safety planning, caring contacts, lethal means management)
-Exceptional communication skills, written, oral, and telephone.
-Experience interacting and communicating with a diverse population, using sensitivity, tact, and discretion.
-Demonstrated computer experience and proficiency, preferably in a Windows-based environment.
-Demonstrated history of commitment to continuously improving quality and service.
-Maintains the highest standards of confidentiality, professionalism, and ethical conduct.
-Demonstrates independent judgment and decision-making skills and appropriately prioritizes and handles multiple tasks.
